In this article, we'll show you step by step how to use rolling picking to process multiple orders in one pass. The WMS App consolidates identical items, guides you through the warehouse via an optimized route, and helps you assign items to picking boxes.
This article covers only rolling picking. You can find information about batch picking here. To learn how to use action codes to capture carts with many boxes directly via scan, see this article.
Starting rolling picking
In the WMS App, open the Picking → Open section and start Multi-Stage Picking.
At the top, select the Rolling mode. Optionally, you can use a pick profile to determine which orders are considered for picking. Then decide on the maximum number of orders you want to pick at the same time and tap Retrieve orders.
Alternatively, you can scan the picking boxes directly to start rolling picking with the scanned boxes.
Overview of open products
After retrieving the orders, you'll see a combined list of all open products. The list is sorted for an optimized picking route. For each product, you'll see the storage location, the target box (if already assigned), an internal picking instruction (if available), and the quantity still to be picked. Tap a product to open the detail view.
At the top, you'll find the number of the picking process, here 1536. It helps you find the process again later—for example, if you set it aside or want to look it up in the administration.
The three-dot menu in the top right offers various options during the picking process:
Via Info, you can:
view the orders included in the picking process and see order details
see which order is assigned to which picking box
scan the picking boxes in the overview to display the orders and their associated products (this also shows which products have already been picked and which haven't)
tap the order and view the detailed information
set aside or cancel individual orders and boxes
Use Partial delivery if you want to ship the already picked items directly as a partial delivery. Items already picked are retained. Items not yet picked remain open and can be picked later.
With Set aside, you put the picking process on hold for later processing and receive a document. This lets you resume the process at a later time.
With Cancel, you discard the picking process. Items already picked must be put back into stock. The picking process is then reset and the orders are moved back to the Open tab.
Confirming and picking products
First, select the product you want to pick. Alternatively, you can simply scan the product.
Next, confirm the storage location of the product. Scan the storage location or select it directly in the app.
Then select the box you want to place the product in. Here, too, you can scan the box label or enter the number manually. Additional items from the same order will then automatically be assigned to the box you've already selected.
Then enter the quantity actually taken (up to the maximum quantity required) and confirm. You can also do this by scan or use our button. When scanning a product, you'll get visual and audible feedback—just as you know from single-order picking.
For the full quantity, you can conveniently use our long-press button to confirm all products at once. Simply hold down the button until the bar has completed its animation.
By default, the next product opens automatically so you can follow the optimized picking route. If you want to pick products in your own order, disable the option Automatically pre-select the next pickable product in the extension settings for Pickware WMS.
While picking, you can view at the bottom which products you've already picked for a better overview.
Once all open product items are complete, rolling picking ends automatically. You'll receive a corresponding confirmation. Then switch to Ship.
Processing orders ready to ship
In the Ready to ship tab, you'll then find all picked orders.
If you open an order, you can mark the order as shipped, create a new shipping label, print the invoice or the delivery note (again), or completely reset the picking process if you need to restart it.
If a delivery has already been fully assembled but no order documents have been printed yet, the app displays a note and offers to print them directly.
Just as in the picking view, you can also view the order details here via the Info button in the top right. Click the respective product to view the product details.
Once the order has been packed and shipped, you can mark it as shipped. The order is then removed from the list of orders ready to ship and you'll receive a confirmation.
This completes the picking process, and you can ship the orders as usual.
