In this article, we show you step by step how to use rolling picking to process multiple orders in one pass. The WMS App combines identical items, guides you through the warehouse along an optimized route, and helps you assign items to picking boxes.
This article describes rolling picking only. You can find information about batch picking here. To learn how to use action codes to capture carts with many boxes directly via scan, check out this article.
Starting rolling picking
In the WMS App, open the Picking section → Open and start Multi-stage picking.
At the top, select the Rolling mode. Optionally, you can use a pick profile to determine which orders are considered for picking. Then decide the maximum number of orders you want to pick at the same time, and tap Retrieve orders.
Alternatively, you can scan the picking boxes directly to start rolling picking with the scanned boxes.
Overview of open products
After retrieving the orders, you see a combined list of all open products. The list is sorted along an optimized route. For each product, you see the storage location, the target box (if already captured), an internal pick instruction (if available), and the quantity still to be picked. Tap a product to open the detail view.
At the top, you find the number of the picking process, here 1536. It helps you find the process again later — for example, if you postpone it or want to look it up in the administration.
The three-dot menu at the top right provides various options during the picking process:
Using Info, you can:
view the orders included in the picking process and see order details
see which order is assigned to which picking box
scan picking boxes in the overview to see the orders and their corresponding products (this also shows which products have already been picked and which have not)
tap the order and view the detailed information
postpone or cancel individual orders and boxes
Use Partial delivery if you want to ship the already picked items directly as a partial delivery. Already picked items are retained. Items not yet picked remain open and can be picked later.
Use Postpone to put the picking process aside for later processing and receive a document. This allows you to resume the process at another time.
Use Cancel to discard the picking process. Items already picked must be put back into storage. The picking process is then reset and the orders are moved back to the Open tab.
Confirming and picking products
First, select the product you want to pick. Alternatively, you can simply scan the product.
In the next step, confirm the product's storage location. Scan the storage location or select it directly in the app.
Then select the box you want to place the product in. Here too, you can scan the box label or enter the number manually. Additional items from the same order will then automatically be assigned to the already selected box.
Then enter the quantity actually taken (up to the maximum required quantity) and confirm. You can also do this by scanning or by using our button. When scanning a product, you receive visual and audible feedback — just as you know from single-order picking.
For the complete quantity, you can conveniently use our long-press button to confirm all products at once. Simply hold down the button until the bar has fully filled.
By default, the next product opens automatically so you can follow the optimized route. If you want to pick products in your own order, disable the option Automatic preselection of the next pickable product in the extension settings for Pickware WMS.
While picking, you can check at the bottom which products you have already picked, for a better overview.
Once all open product items are complete, rolling picking ends automatically. You receive a corresponding confirmation. Then switch to Ship.
Processing orders ready to ship
In the Ready to ship tab, you then find all picked orders.
If you open an order, you can mark it as shipped, create a new shipping label, (re-)print the invoice or delivery note, or completely reset the picking process if you need to start it again.
If a delivery has already been fully assembled but the order documents haven't been printed yet, the app shows a notice and offers to print them directly.
Just as in the picking view, you can use the Info button at the top right to view the order details. Clicking a product lets you view the product details.
Once the order has been packed and shipped, you can mark it as shipped. The order is then removed from the list of orders ready to ship and you receive a confirmation.
This completes the picking process, and you can ship the orders as usual.
