For Pickware POS, you need an iOS-capable device, suitable POS hardware, and optionally a card terminal and a document printer. To ensure the compatibility of your POS hardware and so we can support you with any hardware issues, we recommend purchasing additional POS hardware directly from our Pickware Hardware Shop. You'll find more information and setup tips in the following sections.
Hardware overview
iPad, iPhone and iPod
The Pickware POS system was developed for use with iOS devices and supports iPad, iPhone, and iPod. For the greatest possible convenience in your retail store, we recommend using iPads. For the POS App, you need a device that supports at least iOS 15.
Cash drawer, receipt printer, and customer display
For optimal processes in your store, we recommend additional hardware. Regarding the cash drawer, we recommend two options from our Hardware Shop:
the Star mPOP cash drawer with an integrated receipt printer, which connects via Bluetooth
and the simple cash drawer, which you connect to your receipt printer via cable.
To go with this, you can purchase a receipt printer and customer display from our shop.
To ensure the compatibility of your receipt printer with our POS system, we strongly recommend purchasing it directly from our shop. If you don't have any hardware yet, we offer complete POS sets - either with an integrated or external receipt printer – which include everything you need to equip your store. Please note that you need a separate receipt printer for each register.
In addition to the hardware we offer, you can also continue to use cash drawers you already own. What matters is not the manufacturer of the cash drawer, but the connector used. If your cash drawer can be connected to the receipt printer via an RJ11 cable connection, it can generally be used with Pickware POS. Please note: we recommend hardware from the Pickware Hardware Shop so we can best support you with selection, setup, and troubleshooting. For hardware not purchased from us, we cannot make any statement about the specific compatibility of individual models.
Barcode scanner
For faster checkout, using a barcode scanner is a good idea. You'll find compatible devices in our Hardware Shop:
The POS barcode scanner is connected via USB cable to the cash drawer or the POS receipt printer, ensuring you always have both hands free for scanning.
If you're often at trade fairs and value a mobile checkout, the POS handheld scanner might be a better fit for you, as it connects to your iPad or iPod via Bluetooth.
How do I set up card terminals?
If you want to offer card payments in your retail store, you need the Zettle by PayPal Reader. This is configured directly during the setup of the POS App. The card terminal can be added in the app and then used for payments.
The standalone Zettle Terminal – Zettle's all-in-one device with an integrated display and its own checkout software – is not compatible with Pickware POS, as it cannot connect to your iOS device via Bluetooth. For card payments, you need the Zettle by Paypal Reader or another ZVT-capable card terminal.
You can also use other ZVT-capable card terminals with the POS. In this case, the connection is established via manual configuration. Setup typically requires the following details:
IP address of the card terminal
Port
Device PIN
You'll receive the required values from the respective payment provider or from the card terminal manufacturer's documentation. Please note that when using external card terminals, the amount is not transferred automatically. In this case, the card payment must be set up as an additional payment method in Pickware POS.
For detailed information on setting up and configuring your card terminal, we recommend also using the documentation from the respective manufacturer.
You'll find more information on setting up your card reader here.
Document printer
If invoices are to be printed at the POS system in DIN A4 format, we recommend using a network printer that supports the Internet Printing Protocol (IPP), as it can be connected directly to the POS App. If your printer is not network-capable or doesn't support IPP, you can use a print server.

Setting up hardware
General note
To ensure that your scanner(s) or cash drawer remain permanently connected to your iOS device via Bluetooth, you must grant the app access to the Bluetooth function. To do this, open the Settings app on your iPad / iPod / iPhone and search for the respective app. Enable the Bluetooth option there.
POS handheld scanner
To use the POS handheld scanner in the app, you must first switch the scanner into iOS mode and then connect it via Bluetooth through the general settings of your iPad / iPod. Please note that the scanner must not already be connected to the iPad/iPod via Bluetooth for this.
Turn on the scanner and check that the laser for barcode capture becomes visible when you press the scan button.
Scan the following barcode to switch the scanner into iOS mode. After a successful scan, the scanner will beep three times.
Open the Bluetooth settings on your iOS device. After a brief search, the POS handheld scanner should be found, and you can connect it to your iOS device. This completes the scanner setup.
By default, the scanner goes into standby mode after five minutes of inactivity and must then reconnect to the iPad upon reactivation. The scanner manufacturer offers an alternative mode for this, in which the scanner stays active for eight hours. Simply scan the barcode below for this. Note that the battery drains faster with this setting, so remember to charge the scanner daily.
Since the POS App triggers its own beep when scanning, we recommend disabling the scanner's beep. To do this, scan the barcode below. You can also find this in the manufacturer's manual on page 52.
In the manufacturer's user guide, you'll also find many other setting options that you can easily configure by scanning barcodes.
POS barcode scanner
A firmware update of your cash drawer may be necessary before connecting your barcode scanner. Please read this article for more details.
The POS barcode scanner is connected via USB cable to the POS cash drawer or the POS receipt printer, and is thereby automatically connected to the app. You'll find more information on operating the device here on the manufacturer's website.
POS cash drawer
To use the POS cash drawer, you must first connect it via Bluetooth through the general Bluetooth settings of your iOS device. You can then select it during the app setup.
You'll find help with technical issues related to the cash drawer in this article. You'll find the manufacturer's manual here.
POS receipt printer
To use the POS receipt printer, you must first connect it via Bluetooth through the general Bluetooth settings of your iPad / iPod. During the app setup, at the Set up printer step, you can then select your device and perform a test print. You'll find the device manufacturer's manual here.
Via the Settings button in the app menu, you can make changes to the connected printers' configuration at any time or connect a different device.
Zettle by Paypal
The card payment device via Zettle by Paypal is configured as part of the POS App setup. If you've already connected a device to your app before, it will be directly available for selection. Otherwise, tap on Add card reader and follow the respective steps.
For the card payment device to be connected, the POS App needs access to your local network:
Open the iOS settings.
Search for the POS App.
In the Allow Access section, enable the checkbox for Local Network.
When you add a card reader, you have the option to also output your card payment receipts via the receipt printer, using the Receipts on receipt printer option. If this option is disabled, receipts are instead printed via the card terminal.
You'll find more information on setting up Zettle by Paypal on the provider's support page.
Document printer
You can connect and configure your document printer directly in the app setup. To do this, the printer only needs to be on the same network as your iOS device. Additionally, the app needs access to your local network. To do this, open the settings of your iOS device, search for the app's name, and enable the Local Network option there.
If you encounter problems during setup or while using the printer, we've compiled some troubleshooting tips for you here. If this information doesn't help, please contact our support team.
