How do I configure the hardware for Pickware POS?

So that your scanner or cash drawer can stay permanently connected to your iOS device via Bluetooth, you need to grant the app access to the Bluetooth function. To do this, open the Settings app on your iPad / iPod / iPhone and search for the respective app. Enable the Bluetooth option there.

POS Handheld Scanner

To use the POS Handheld Scanner in the app, you first need to put the scanner into iOS mode and then connect it via Bluetooth using the general settings of your iPad / iPod. Please note that the scanner must not already be connected to the iPad / iPod via Bluetooth for this to work.

  1. Turn on the scanner and check that the laser for barcode capture becomes visible when you press the scan button.

  2. Scan the following barcode to put the scanner into iOS mode. After a successful scan, the scanner will beep three times.

  3. Open the Bluetooth settings on your iOS device. After a short search, the POS Handheld Scanner should be found, and you can connect it to your iOS device. This completes the scanner setup.

By default, the scanner goes into standby mode after five minutes of inactivity and must then reconnect to the iPad when reactivated. The scanner manufacturer offers an alternative mode for this, in which the scanner stays active for eight hours. Simply scan the barcode below to enable it. The battery drains faster with this setting, so remember to charge the scanner daily.

Since the POS App triggers its own beep when scanning, it's a good idea to disable the scanner's beep. To do this, scan the following barcode. You can also find it in the manufacturer's manual on page 52.

Scanning shipping labels in the WMS with the POS Handheld Scanner

If you also use the POS Handheld Scanner in the Pickware WMS App — for example to scan shipping labels during the shipping step — the app may sometimes show an error message and fail to recognize the label. This is because, by default, the scanner also transmits additional control characters (e.g. parentheses) contained in the shipping label's barcode.

In this case, enable Data As Is mode: the scanner then transmits the barcode unchanged, and the shipping label is recognized correctly. To do this, scan the barcode below with the handheld scanner. You can also find it in the manufacturer's manual.

You'll also find many more configuration options in the manufacturer's user guide, which you can easily set by scanning barcodes.

POS Barcode Scanner

A firmware update for your cash drawer may be required before you connect your barcode scanner. Please read this article for more information.

The POS Barcode Scanner is connected via USB cable to the POS cash drawer or the POS receipt printer, and is thereby automatically connected to the app. You can find more information on operating the device here on the manufacturer's website.

POS Cash Drawer

To use the POS Cash Drawer, you first need to connect it via Bluetooth using the general Bluetooth settings on your iPad / iPod. You can then select it during the app setup.

You'll find help with technical issues related to the cash drawer in this article. You can find the manufacturer's manual here.

If you're not using a POS cash drawer from Pickware, you can generally also use another wired cash drawer. The requirement is that it connects to your receipt printer via an RJ11 cable connection. In this case, integration takes place through the receipt printer. POS Receipt Printer

To use the POS Receipt Printer, you first need to connect it via Bluetooth using the general Bluetooth settings on your iPad / iPod. During app setup, you can then select your device and perform a test print at the Set up printer step. You can find the device manufacturer's manual here.

You can make changes to the configuration of connected printers or connect a different device at any time via the Settings button in the app menu.

Card Payment

The card payment device is configured as part of the POS App setup. If you've already connected a device to your app before, it will be directly available for selection. Otherwise, tap on Add card reader and follow the respective steps.

For the card payment device to be connected, the POS App needs access to your local network:

  1. Open the iOS settings.

  2. Search for the POS App.

  3. In the Allow Access section, enable the checkmark next to Local Network.

When you add a card reader, the Receipts on Receipt Printer option lets you also have your card payment receipts printed via the receipt printer. If this option is disabled, receipts are printed via the card terminal instead.

Document Printer

You can connect and configure your document printer directly in the app setup. The printer only needs to be on the same network as your iOS device. In addition, the app needs access to your local network. To do this, open the settings on your iOS device, search for the app's name, and enable the Local Network option there.

Settings for Your iOS Device

To make everyday use of the POS App more convenient, we recommend also making the following settings on your iOS device:

  • Under SettingsFace/Touch ID & Passcode, disable the mandatory passcode entry for unlocking the display.

  • Set the automatic display lock under SettingsDisplay & Brightness to, for example, five minutes, or turn it off completely.

  • Reduce the display brightness to achieve a longer battery life for the devices.

  • Check that the settings for your country are set under SettingsGeneralLanguage & Region.

  • Move the POS App to the quick access bar at the bottom edge of the display.

We also recommend using the Pickware App with sound turned on, so that you get audible feedback when scanning barcodes. Please note that, in addition to the volume controls in the operating system, iPhones have a mute switch on the left side that must be turned off.
