What hardware do I need?

Using our plugins requires certain hardware. You'll find a list of it here. Click the respective link or scroll down to learn more.

Document printer

For the best use of our plugins, we recommend using a network printer that supports the Internet Printing Protocol (IPP). Most network printers support this, and you'll usually find information about it in your printer's manual.

The printer should have two different trays for the paper formats A4 for delivery notes and invoices, and A5/A6 for shipping labels, so that documents in these formats can be printed. You can also use different printers per format. In addition, when using multiple Pickware WMS devices, it's possible to use a different printer for each one.

If your printer isn't network-capable or doesn't support IPP, or if you want to print under Windows, you can use a print server.

You'll find all the information on setting up a printer in this article. You can get help with printer issues here.

Label printer

To connect label printers for creating shipping labels, we use the printer language of the manufacturer Zebra (ZPL), which is also supported by other manufacturers such as Dymo or Brother. The device must also be network-capable. A proven model is the Zebra ZD420.

iPhone / iPod / iPad

Our apps for Pickware POS and Pickware WMS are only available for iOS, so you need an iOS-capable device.

Software

The WMS App requires at least iOS 15. For all other apps, you need at least iOS 12 or higher so that you can always benefit from the latest security updates.

Hardware

The following Apple models are supported in terms of hardware:

  • iPhone SE (2nd and 3rd generation), iPhone 6s, iPhone 7, iPhone 8, iPhone 13, iPhone 14

  • iPod Touch 7th generation (2019)

  • iPad Pro 9.7", iPad Pro 10.5", iPad Pro 11", iPad Pro 12.9", iPad Air 2, iPad Air 3, iPad mini 4 - 5, iPad 5th and 6th generation (iPad 9.7") or newer models

Compared to the iPod Touch, iPhones offer better battery performance, larger screens, and better performance, and also allow operation over the mobile network (UMTS & LTE), which is particularly useful for mobile use, e.g. at trade fairs (note that local network printers can't be used when using mobile data). iPod Touches, on the other hand, are considerably cheaper to purchase. In addition, the latest version of the matching scanner cases for iPhones has a replaceable battery, unlike those for the iPod Touch.

For Pickware POS, we recommend using iPads for stationary checkouts, whereas iPods or iPhones can also be used for mobile checkouts.

For Pickware WMS, you need an iPod or iPhone, which is used as a barcode scanner for scanning together with the corresponding case.

The number of devices you need depends on the number of employees you have working in your warehouse or store. To make optimal use of Pickware across the entire process chain, we recommend equipping each workstation with one device. We also recommend an additional device as a backup for peak loads.

Scanner case

For Pickware WMS, we recommend using a suitable scanner case. You'll find the scanner case, as well as the protective case and charging station, that fits your Apple device in our hardware shop. You can also find out about the advantages of our barcode scanner cases over classic hardware in this blog post.

Cash drawer / receipt printer / customer display

Regarding the cash drawer, we offer two options in our hardware shop:

  • the Star mPOP cash drawer with integrated receipt printer, which connects via Bluetooth

  • and the simple cash drawer, which you connect to your receipt printer via cable. If you already own a cash drawer that supports the RJ11 cable connector, you can continue using it with Pickware POS.

You can also purchase a matching receipt printer and customer display from us in the shop. If you don't have any hardware yet, we offer complete checkout sets – with either an integrated or an external receipt printer – that include everything you need to equip your store.

Barcode scanner

Using a barcode scanner makes checkout faster. You'll find compatible devices in our hardware shop:

  • The POS barcode scanner connects to the cash drawer or the POS receipt printer via USB cable, making sure you always have both hands free for scanning.

  • If, on the other hand, you're often at trade fairs and value a mobile checkout, the POS hand scanner might be a better fit for you, since it can be connected to your iPad or iPod via Bluetooth.

ZVT device / Zettle by Paypal Reader

If you want to offer card payments in your store, you need either the Zettle by Paypal Reader or another ZVT device.

The standalone Zettle Terminal – Zettle's all-in-one device with an integrated display and its own POS software – is not compatible with Pickware POS, as it can't connect to your iOS device via Bluetooth. For card payments with Pickware POS, you need the Zettle by Paypal Reader or another ZVT-capable card terminal.
