Note: If you work with locations, a warehouse is called a Warehouse zone. Locations and fulfillment orders with Pickware explains what changes as a result.
A product can have a maximum of one default bin location in each warehouse. Even if the stock for this bin location drops to 0, the allocation is retained.
Assign a default bin location manually
You can customize default bin locations in the product details on the Stock tab. There you will find a separate section for each warehouse, where you can use the dropdown menu to choose from all bin locations on which the product has stock. The star next to the name of the bin location indicates the default bin location. The entry Bin location unknown cannot be selected as a default bin location.
You can change the default bin location at any time. Simply select a new bin location in the dropdown menu. The previous bin location then automatically loses its assignment. If you want to remove the assignment without setting a new default bin location, click the small "x" next to the assigned bin location in the dropdown menu. If no "x" is displayed, select the bin location in the field and press the Delete key on your keyboard.
Assign a default bin location in the WMS App
You can also change the default bin location directly in the WMS App — handy if you are already standing at the bin location. To do so, open the Products and bin locations mode in the app, select the product by scanning or searching, and tap Edit at the top right. In the Default bin locations section, you set the default bin location for each warehouse.
You can find the complete process in the article Where can I view and edit information about products and bin locations in the WMS App?
Assign a default location via CSV import
You can also assign the default bin location to several products at once via CSV import. To do so, open the stock overview under Warehousing → Stock overview. Here you can filter the overview as needed, for example by selecting specific products or warehouses. Then click Export.
In the CSV file, you can now adjust the values in the Default bin location column and upload the modified file again via the Import button in the stock overview. Please be sure to follow our notes on handling CSV files. You can find more about the stock overview here.
The Default bin location column only exists in the Per product and bin location view. Therefore, select this view before exporting and set the value yes in the row of the desired bin location. If a product does not yet have stock on the destination bin location, this row is not included in the export. In that case, add it yourself with a stock of 0.
What role does the default bin location play in stock movements?
Behavior when stocking
For manual stock movements, the respective default bin location is preselected after you choose the warehouse. For stock increases via CSV import, the product is likewise stocked on its default bin location. If no default bin location has been assigned to the respective product in the default warehouse, it is stocked without a bin location assignment (unknown bin location).
Goods receipts and the rebooking of canceled picking processes are also placed on the default bin location. Returns that come back via Shopify, on the other hand, are booked in by Pickware without a bin location, even if a default bin location is set.
Behavior when unstocking
If you ship an order via Pickware Admin and the product is assigned to several bin locations, stock is removed in alphabetical order. The default bin location is not given special consideration here. Stock from the unknown bin location is always removed last.
A different logic applies when picking with the WMS App. There, too, the default bin location does not influence the pick suggestion. You can find out which bin location is suggested in How does Pickware decide which bin location to remove stock from?.
