How can I assign a default bin location in a warehouse to products?

Assign products a default bin location manually, in the WMS App or via CSV import, and learn what it is used for.

A product can have a maximum of one default bin location in each warehouse. Even if the stock for this bin location drops to 0, the assignment is retained.

Assign a default bin location manually

Default bin locations can be set per warehouse in the product details on the Stock tab using a dropdown menu.

A separate section is available for each warehouse. There you can see all bin locations where the product is stored. The default bin location is marked with a star.

To change the default bin location, simply select a new bin location using the bin location search in the dropdown. The previous bin location then automatically loses its assignment.

If you want to remove the assignment without setting a new default bin location, click the small "x" next to the assigned bin location in the dropdown menu. If no "x" is displayed, select the bin location in the field and press the Delete key on your keyboard.

Assign a default bin location in the WMS App

You can also change the default bin location directly in the WMS App, which is handy if you are already standing at the bin location. To do so, open the Products and bin locations mode in the app, select the product by scanning or searching, and tap Edit in the top right. In the Default bin locations section, you set the default bin location for each warehouse.

Assign a default bin location via CSV import

You can also assign the default bin location for multiple products at once via CSV import. To do so, open the stock overview under Warehousing → Stock overview. You can now filter the overview as needed, for example by selecting specific products or warehouses. Then click Export.

In the CSV file, you can now adjust the values in the Default bin location column and upload the modified file again using the Import button in the stock overview. Please be sure to follow our notes on handling CSV files in Shopware.

The Default bin location column is only available in the Per product and bin location view. Therefore, select this view before the export and set the value yes in the row of the desired bin location. If a product does not yet have any stock in the destination bin location, this row is not included in the export. In that case, add it yourself with a stock of 0.

What role does the default bin location play in stock movements?

Behavior when stocking

For manual stock movements, the respective default bin location is preselected after you select the warehouse. For stock increases via the Shopware API or CSV import, the product is also stocked in its default bin location. If no default bin location has been assigned to the respective product in the default warehouse, the stocking takes place without a bin location assignment (unknown bin location).

Goods receipts, returns created in the Shopware Admin, and the restocking of canceled picking processes also end up in the default bin location.

Behavior when removing stock

If you ship an order via the Shopware Admin and the product is assigned to multiple bin locations, the stock is removed in alphabetical order. The default bin location is not given special consideration here. Stock from the unknown bin location is always removed last.

A different logic applies when picking with the WMS App. There, too, the default bin location does not influence the pick suggestion. You can find out which bin location is suggested in How does Pickware decide which bin location to remove stock from?.
