How does Pickware help automatically determine the right box size?

Shopware 6 — Use rules and flows to automatically suggest the right box size based on product dimensions, weight or manufacturer.

If you want to automatically get a suggested box size for orders, you can set this up using the Flow Builder. With rules and flows, you can easily define yourself which box size should be suggested for specific order conditions.

Procedure

Create a rule

First, create a rule that accesses the dimensions of the order line items. Here is an example:

This rule should apply when the height, length or width of a line item exceeds a certain amount. Then the defined rule must be linked to a flow.

Create a flow in the Flow Builder

  • Open the Flow Builder in your Shopware Admin.

  • Create a new flow with, for example, the trigger Checkout / Order / Placed.

  • Then add a condition that refers to the rule you created earlier.

  • Then define Set custom field as the action. There, select the custom field set Instructions and, within it, the field you want to fill, and write the note about the box size.

The Instructions set contains two fields that appear at different points in the process: The Picking instruction is displayed in the picking flow of the WMS App, the Packing instruction in the packing or shipping flow. A note about the box size therefore belongs in the Packing instruction if it should be visible during packing. If it should already appear during picking, you can additionally write it in the picking instruction.

With rules and flows, you can therefore have completely personalized packaging suggestions created. You are not limited to the dimensions of a product, but can, for example, also use this for products with a certain weight and/or from a specific manufacturer that require special packaging.

Example use cases

  • Automatic selection of the default carton depending on weight or volume.

  • Avoiding incorrect packaging and unnecessary filling material.

  • Supporting new employees during picking.

  • Notes on separate packaging for special items.

This method only recommends one box size and does not replace fully automatic packaging optimization. However, you can combine as many rules and flows as you like to flexibly map your packaging system.

Tip: Also create your boxes as shipping material. Then, when packing in the WMS App, you select the box actually used, its dimensions and weight go directly onto the shipping label, and the order documents which box was used. For products that are usually shipped individually, you can store a default shipping box that is preselected during packing.
