How can I customize my order documents with the document editor?

Customize invoice layouts and other order documents in Pickware for Shopify: your own layout, logo and content without Twig.

With our document editor, you customize the layout and content of your order documents directly in your Pickware Admin, for example your own invoice layout with a logo, colors, or additional details — without a custom Twig file and without a developer.

Note: The document editor is included in the Professional plan. You can request a free trial via the Design the document button. After the trial, you automatically switch back to your previous plan.

Open the document editor

Navigate to Settings → Shop → Documents and open the document type you want. On the detail page, you will find the Design the document button at the top right, which opens the document editor.

If your shop has not yet created a single one of these documents, the editor is initially locked, because it shows the preview and variables based on an existing document.

Simple view and Expert mode

At the top right of the editor, you switch between two views: the Simple view (default) and Expert mode.

In the Simple view, you select what you want to customize from a list of quick settings for the respective document. For example, you can quickly set a background image or logo. You can also choose which Sales Channels the changes should apply to.

You can refresh the preview using the button at the top right. This shows you directly how your change affects the finished document before you save it.

In addition, the Simple view shows you the note Edit with Pickware AI. Instead of making the changes manually, you simply describe in the chat what should change — for example adjusting colors or fonts, adding columns, or moving line items. You can find out more in the article Customize document templates with Pickware AI.

Expert mode hides the quick settings and gives you selectable editing blocks with direct access to Twig and CSS — for customizations that go beyond the options of the Simple view. For this, you need knowledge of Twig and CSS.

You can also add your own custom CSS here or choose from available variables.

Scope of the customization

You can make a customization globally (for all Sales Channels) or specifically for a single Sales Channel. If no separate customization is stored for a Sales Channel, the global customization applies automatically — and if there is no global customization either, the original scope of the document is used.

Do invoice corrections apply the customizations of the invoice?

Yes. Invoice corrections apply the customizations you make to the invoice.

If a customization cannot be saved

The editor checks your customization directly against a preview. If the document can no longer be rendered as a result, the editor notifies you before saving ("This document cannot be rendered at the moment") — the faulty change is not applied.

The editor can also be completely locked if another extension has already taken over the document output of your shop ("Customizations cannot be applied"). In this case, deactivate the other extension in order to use the document editor.

Security restrictions

The document editor does not replace every conceivable Twig function — for security reasons, the range of functions is restricted. Unlike in Shopware 6, there is no file access for custom Twig templates in the Pickware Cloud: if the editor's options are not sufficient for a customization, contact Pickware Support.

Which details are available as variables?

Not every detail is available as a variable in the document editor.
