A well-thought-out warehouse setup forms the basis for efficient processes with Pickware WMS. Clear structures, short travel distances, and clearly labeled storage bins help avoid errors and make daily warehouse work easier. Building on our tips, you can then choose the right picking strategy, tailored to your individual warehouse structure and order volume. You can find more tips in our blog.
How do I structure my warehouse sensibly?
The warehouse should be divided into fixed functional areas to enable clear workflows. In particular, this includes a defined goods receipt area for supplier orders and returns, a picking area for sellable items, a packing area, and a goods issue area for packages ready for shipment. Spatially or visually separating these areas creates clarity and reduces mix-ups. If space is limited, items with low turnover can also be moved to outsourced storage areas.
What equipment do I need?
Basic equipment is required for smooth operations. This includes sufficiently large packing tables with the necessary tools, easily accessible printers for invoices and shipping labels, and reliable WLAN coverage throughout the warehouse for working with barcode scanners. Shelving systems and transport aids should match the type and size of the stored items.
How do I label storage bins sensibly?
Clear and consistent labeling of storage bins is crucial for orientation and efficient travel distances. A fixed numbering scheme that reflects the aisle, shelf position, and height of the storage bin has proven effective. Storage bins can be created automatically in Pickware and labeled with tags including a barcode. For reliable process control, good barcode quality should be ensured.
How do I reduce travel distances?
Short travel distances contribute significantly to fast picking processes. The packing area should ideally be located centrally in the warehouse. It's also advisable to place items according to their turnover rate: frequently sold items near the packing area, less common items further away. Default storage bins help Pickware suggest suitable bins during putaway. Alternatively, a combination of fixed and flexible storage bins can be used to make efficient use of warehouse space.
